Sky have made an agreement with Cello to extend it’s Sky Player service to Freeview boxes and to the manufacturers web connected TV’s.
This is the first time that Sky has made it’s services available to those on Freeview as Sky looks to expand into the market.
As for Sky Player on a set-top box, this will be supplied by PVR maker 3View, which combine access to internet video services with DTT broadcasts.
Speaking about the partnership, Griff Parry, Sky’s Director of On-demand, said: “The coming together of ground-breaking video services like Sky Player with innovative platforms like Cello and 3View demonstrates the vibrancy of the evolving internet video-on-demand sector.
“We will continue to look at opportunities to distribute Sky Player across new platforms, to give consumers even more choice and control over how they access high-quality pay TV content.”
The Sky Player service is already available at the moment through different methods such as Xbox live but this will be the first time that it has come to freeview boxes with current Sky subscribers getting access to the service for free but non-Sky customers will have a monthly fee to pay.
The service allows people looking for a cheaper service than a full Sky package to gain access to some extra programmes they previously wouldn’t have been able to.
